wpe1.jpg (10124 bytes)   July, August and September bring wild land fire season to Washington. When relative humidity drops, temperatures rise and east winds blow, our fire danger in southwest Washington greatly increases. Fire District 3 is home to many of the large Yacolt Burns of the 20th Century. The 1902 Yacolt Burn destroyed 238,000 acres and took several lives. Fires throughout the century devastated scores of homes, acres of timberland and the associated wildlife. The one-hundredth anniversary of the 1902 Yacolt Burn is September 11.

Once again, Fire District 3 is offering the "Fire Risk Rating of Homes in the Wildland/Urban Interface" program. Our two Fire Risk Specialists will visit your home and complete a survey that rates the danger your home may face from a wild land fire, and provides information on how you may reduce that danger. Since 1991 our Fire Risk Specialists have surveyed over 4,500 homes during the summer months. More that 80% of those surveyed have made simple changes that greatly improved the safety of their property. Help reduce the fire threat around your home and call for a free survey today.

Summer also brings an increase in the number of injuries and deaths related to outdoor recreational activities. Automobile accidents, water-related injuries, pedestrian injuries, and horse related injuries increase during this time of year. More traffic and more people recreating in the area bring more dangers. We hope people will consider these increased dangers when planning summer activities.

Fire District 3 plans to honor the memory of those firefighters and police officers killed in the terrorists attacks on the United States with a special ceremony at Station 3-1 on September 11. Our personnel will join thousands of fire departments across the country with a simultaneous remembrance. All 343 names of the firefighters killed in the collapse of the World Trade Center buildings will be read. The ceremony will take place at the exact one-year anniversary of the attacks. The public is invited to attend the ceremony. Call Station 3-1 after September 1 for details.

Our Fire Commissioner meetings are the first and third Wednesday of each month. They are held at 4:30 P.M. at Station 3-1 in Hockinson. We welcome your attendance and participation.

Fire District 3 has a long tradition of excellence. This year we celebrate our 55th year of serving the Hockinson, Brush Prairie, Venersborg, Battle Ground Lake/Heisson and Rawson Rd./Highlands neighborhoods. We have a long history of community involvement in providing excellent, cost effective service. We are committed to continuing that tradition.

We are grateful for your continued support and welcome your questions and comments. Please feel free to call me at (360) 892-2331 or e-mail at steve@clarkcofd3.org.
